Marjorie answers:

I always start with something real that I think is beautiful, such as the golden bull lyre, or some invention that I think is wonderful, useful, and also real (the spear-thrower). I’m not a fast writer, so I build a story around something that keeps me focused and interested in both the research and the actual writing.
